A Wise old Owl in a knit blue cowl.
Because some days..... you just need to keep a sense of humor.
The Great Horned Owl a symbol of Wisdom. The horned owl also known as a Tiger owl is the 2nd heaviest owl in North America. This owl's call at night is the typical Whoo hoo hoo ... that we expect to hear from an owl.
The females are larger than the males of this species of Avian. Typical size ranges from 17" -25" in height, with a wing span of 36" - 60" wide. The body is barrel shaped with a large head . North American Horned owls have yellow eyes, & South American horned owls have the amber to orange glowing eyes.
Their eyes are as large as a human and have binocular vision excellent for viewing in the low light at night.. The owl can not move its eyes in their sockets, so they turn their neck to a full 270 degree angle. The tufts are feathers coming from the ears.Their hearing is even more precise than their vision, with one ear being placed higher on it's skull.
The talons have a crushing capacity of 300 PSI comparable to the Golden Eagle.
The Great horned owl lives primarily in rural areas and forest settings as there is an abundance of rodents. Owls primarily dine on rabbits, mice, rats but can prey upon porcupines and skunks.
Having no natural predator except for the occasional run in with an Eagle, the Horned owl has a life span of approximately 13 years in the wild, becoming a victim of an altercation with an car or electric power lines.
Pesticides and Rat poisons are having a negative effect on the Owl population.
Please do not poison their food source. The Owls ingest them - & suffer the effects of the poison too.
Bubo Virginianus is the Latin name.
